Vacation Rentals Versus Hotels Comparison Shopping Trends, Vacation Planning Trends, and Vacation Themes Trends for New JerseyCoast’s Top Vacation Destinations

March 10, 2010 – The leading lodging web site Rentalo.com reveals the findings of a recent study conducted on 15,689 opted-in travelers who searched for vacation rentals in New Jersey’s top leisure destinations along the coast from July 2008 to January 2010.  This trend study is consistent with other comparison shopping trends published by travel experts during Q4 of 2009, and also in January of 2010.  In addition, the worldwide lodging directory shares some interesting findings on traveler’s vacation planning habits and destination’s vacation themes for New Jersey’s vacation destinations including Long Beach Island, Wildwood, North Wildwood, Ocean City, and Cape May. 

New Jersey Coast Vacation Destination: Long Beach Island

Comparison Shopping Trends for Long Beach Island: The study revealed that 70 percent of the vacation planners who inquired for a place to stay showed interest in comparison shopping among Long Beach vacation rentals, bed breakfasts, and hotels.  40 percent of leisure travelers showed interest in staying nearby Long Beach Island in cities like Ship Bottom, Beach Haven, Surf City, West Creek, Holgate, Tuckerton, Manahawkin, Harvey Cedars, Loveladies, Barnegat Light, Port Republic, and Forked River.

Planning Trends for Long Beach Island:  60 percent were early planners who started their vacation planning 1 to 2 months in advance, 25 percent were from last minute travelers inquiring within the last 30 days prior to the arriving to their Long Beach lodging, and the remaining 15 percent were from travelers planning 1 to 2 months prior to travel date.

Vacation Themes for Long Beach Island: Long Beach Island’s most popular vacation theme is family vacations  with 63 percent of the inquiries requesting accommodations for families kids, 47 percent for groups of more than 4 adults, 16 percent for couples on romantic getaways, and 1 percent for people traveling alone.

New Jersey Coast Vacation Destination: Wildwood

Comparison Shopping Trends for Wildwood: According to the study, 62 percent of the trip planners showed interest in comparison shopping among Wildwood vacation rentals, cabins, bed and breakfasts, and hotels.  37 percent showed interest in staying in the vicinity of Wildwood which includes West Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, North Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Cold Spring, Cape May Court House, Avalon, and Sea Isle City.

Vacation Planning Trends for Wildwood:  52 percent were early planners who started their vacation planning 2 or more months in advance from the travel date, 22 percent were from last minute travelers inquiring within the last 30 days prior to the arrival date to their Wildwood lodging, and the remaining 24 percent from travel planners working on their vacation planning 1 to 2 months in advance.

Vacation Themes for Wildwood:  The most popular vacation theme for Wildwood is family vacations with 62 percent of the traveler’s inquiries requesting accommodations for families with children, 50 percent for groups of more than 4 adults, 11 percent for couples, and 1 percent for people traveling alone.

New Jersey Coast Vacation Destination: North Wildwood

Comparison Shopping Trends for North Wildwood: According to stats collected, 60 percent of the vacation planners showed interest in comparison shopping among North Wildwood vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts, hotels, and resorts.  23 percent showed interest in comparing quotes for other lodgings in North Wildwood area including West Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, Stone Harbor, Cape May Court House, Cold Spring, Avalon, Sea Isle City, and Middletown.

Vacation planning Trends for North Wildwood:  52 percent were from early planners inquiring 2 or more months in advance, 26 percent of the inquiries came from last minute planners who started their vacation planning within the last 30 days prior to their travel date, and 22 percent of the inquiries were sent 1 to 2 months in advance.

Vacation Theme Trends for North Wildwood:  The most popular vacation theme for North Wildwood is family vacations with 59 percent of the inquiries requesting accommodations for families with children, 47 percent for groups of more than 4 adults, 15 percent for couples, and 2 percent for people traveling alone.

New Jersey Coast Vacation Destination: Ocean City

Comparison Shopping Trends for Ocean City: 57 percent of the travelers who searched for short term accommodations showed interest in comparison shopping among Ocean City vacation rentals, bed breakfasts, and hotels.  51 percent showed interest in staying in nearby cities such as Somers Point, Marmora, Margate City, Northfield, Ventnor, Pleasantville, Middletown, West Atlantic City, Sea Isle City, Atlantic City, Absecon, Avalon, Port Republic, Cape May Court House, and Stone Harbor.

Vacation Planning Trends for Ocean City:  According to this study, 48 percent of the travelers were early planners who started their vacation planning 2 or more months in advance from the travel date, 33 percent were from last minute travelers inquiring within the last 30 days prior to the arrival date, and 19 percent of the inquiries were from travelers who inquired 1 to 2 months in advance.

Vacation Theme Trends for Ocean City:  Ocean City ‘s most popular vacation theme is family vacations and reunions with 60 percent of the traveler’s inquiries requesting accommodations for families with children, 39 percent for groups of more than 4 adults, 16 percent for couples, and 1 percent for people traveling alone.

New Jersey Coast Vacation Destination: Cape May

Comparison Shopping Trends for Cape May: According to the study, 59 percent of the trip planners showed interest in comparison shopping among Cape May vacation rentals, cabins, bed and breakfasts, and hotels. 

Vacation Planning Trends for Cape May:  56 percent were early planners who started their vacation planning 2 or more months in advance from the travel date, 29 percent were from last minute travelers inquiring within the last 30 days prior to the arrival date to their Cape May lodging, and 14 percent of the inquiries were sent 1 to 2 months in advance.

Vacation Themes for Cape May:  The most popular vacation theme for Cape May is family vacations and reunions with 55 percent of the traveler’s inquiries requesting accommodations for families with kids, 43 percent for groups of more than 4 adults, 20 percent for couples, and 4 percent for people traveling alone.
